The feud between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk escalated into the public eye. Musk initially threatened to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. However, hours later, he reversed his decision and said the spacecraft would remain in service.
The tension between the two men arose after Trump threatened to cut government subsidies and contracts. Trump posted on his social media platform, “The easiest way to save billions of dollars is to end Elon’s government subsidies and contracts. I’ve always been surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
Musk responded, “Effective immediately, we’re retiring the Dragon program. SpaceX won’t operate a system at the mercy of politics.”
However, just hours after that, Musk appeared to change his mind again. A follower on his platform advised him and Trump to “take a step back” for a few days, and Musk replied, “Good advice. Okay, we won’t decommission Dragon.”
The Dragon spacecraft has played a crucial role in resupplying the International Space Station and transporting NASA astronauts to orbit. However, its future was uncertain due to the escalating feud.
The Dragon spacecraft has been a symbol of American commercial space innovation, but it’s now caught in the crossfire of a heated political dispute. The feud marks a sharp turnaround for two men who once seemed aligned in policy and public image. Musk donated over $250 million to Trump’s re-election campaign and was seen as one of the administration’s top tech supporters.
Dragon spacecraft has a key part to play in NASA’s partnership with SpaceX, which has secured $15 billion in contracts from the agency. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket has also successfully launched numerous NASA science payloads into space.
SpaceX’s rocket launch operations are crucial for national security satellite launches, and the company’s military satellite division is building a vast spy constellation in orbit for a US intelligence agency. Scrapping the Dragon spacecraft would likely disrupt the International Space Station programme, which involves dozens of countries under a long-standing international agreement.
