AMD’s $100 Billion AI Vision by 2030 Challenges Nvidia’s Lead

AMD Expects Triple Profit by 2030 as Data Chip Market Hits $1 Trillion

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced ambitious growth targets on Tuesday, projecting that its annual data center chip revenue will reach $100 billion within the next five years, with earnings expected to more than triple. The company’s shares responded positively, rising 4% in post-market trading after closing down 2.7% at $237.52, partly driven by a recent multi-year deal with OpenAI valued in the tens of billions annually. This partnership, while unlikely to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI chipmaking, signals strong confidence in AMD’s future prospects.

AMD‘s CEO Lisa Su highlighted at its first analyst day in three years that the data center market is projected to grow to $1 trillion by 2030, fueled largely by artificial intelligence (AI). The company foresees 35% annual growth across its entire business and 60% growth specifically in data center chips over the next three to five years, with earnings per share expected to reach $20, compared to an estimated $2.68 in 2025.

The company’s strategic focus extends to launching its next-generation MI400 AI chips in 2026, designed for scientific research and generative AI, along with new server rack products similar to Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72. AMD has also been active in acquisitions, including recent purchases of AI-related startups and the server builder ZT Systems, aiming to bolster its software capabilities and AI infrastructure.

Despite competition from Nvidia, which predicts the AI infrastructure market to grow to $3-4 trillion by 2030, AMD remains confident about its position. Its recent financials reflect optimism, with fourth-quarter revenues surpassing Wall Street estimates, driven by demand for AI chips and increased investments in data center technology. Overall, AMD’s strategic initiatives and growth projections demonstrate its ambition to capture a significant share of the expanding AI and data center markets.
