On thursday US President Trump said he has secured total and permanent access to Greenland through a deal with NATO. On the other hand, NATO chiefs said that all member countries need to increase security in the Arctic region because of growing threats from Russia and China.
This news came after Trump stepped back from threatening new tariffs on European goods and also made it clear that he will not take Greenland by force. This reduced the tensions between the U.S. and Europe, which had been on the brink of their worst crisis in decades.
However, the details of the agreement are not yet clear, and Denmark has clearly stated that Greenland belongs to Denmark and that Greenland’s sovereignty is not up for discussion. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said relations between the U.S. and Europe had taken a big hit in recent days.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed Trump’s comments but said he does not know what the agreement actually says. Also said that Greenland is open to talks and better partnerships, but sovereignty is a strict red line that cannot be crossed, and it will not give up control of its land.
Trump later said the deal was being discussed and would be very beneficial for the United States, allowing America to act freely. As he was avoiding the conversation about sovereignty, he told Fox Business that the deal would give the U.S. “total access” with no time limit.

Sources said that Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed to start talks between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland to update a 1951 agreement that already allows U.S. military access in Greenland and presence on arctic island. This framework may also stop Russian and Chinese investments in that region. However, Mark Rutte declined any comments on this particular topic.
Rute said that NATO leaders will work more on extra security around Arctic regions and hope progress can be made by early 2026
