The U.S. economy experienced a significant growth spurt over the recent three-month period, surpassing earlier estimates, despite ongoing uncertainties linked to President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
According to federal government data released on Thursday, the economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.8% in the second quarter, up from the 3.3% initially reported and significantly higher than the earlier estimate of 3%. This acceleration marked a notable rebound from a contraction of -0.5% in the first quarter of 2025, signaling an overall slowdown in the first half of the year.
The surge was largely driven by an increase in consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of economic activity and serves as a key indicator of economic health. However, the impact of Trump’s tariffs complicates the interpretation of the GDP figures. The government’s GDP calculation involves subtracting imports to exclude foreign production, which can be affected by trade policies. During the first quarter, imports surged as firms stockpiled inventory to avoid tariffs, leading to a lower GDP reading. Conversely, a decline in imports in the second quarter may have artificially inflated growth figures.
Despite the positive GDP data, the economy faces challenges. An earlier jobs report indicated a sharp slowdown in hiring in August, and subsequent revisions showed that job growth in 2024 and early 2025 was weaker than initially estimated. These signs have heightened fears among analysts of a potential recession, although widespread layoffs have not yet materialized.

In response, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates last week to stimulate hiring, with projections of two more rate cuts by the end of 2025. The recent rate cuts mark a significant move after a nine-month pause, reflecting concerns over the economy’s trajectory amid mixed signals of growth and weakness.
