Over 8,000 U.S. flights were delayed Sunday amid air traffic controller shortages and a 26-day government shutdown. Staff shortages at airports and agencies affect around 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers working unpaid, straining the system. Secretary Sean Duffy reported staffing issues at 22 FAA locations, predicting more delays and cancellations.
FlightAware data showed delays rising from 5,300 on Saturday to over 8,000 on Sunday. Major airlines like Southwest, American, United, and Delta experienced significant delays, with Southwest accounting for 45% of them.
The FAA issued ground delay programs at airports like Chicago O’Hare, Washington Reagan National, and Newark Liberty due to staffing shortages. Although delays and ground stops are common during such shutdowns, the current increase is concerning. Controllers, fearing missed paychecks, are seeking additional income sources, with some working second jobs, according to Duffy.
Many controllers were already working overtime before the shutdown, so a staffing shortfall of about 3,500 controllers worsens delays. Past shutdowns, like the 2019 35-day one, also led to slower air traffic and longer wait times.
These disruptions go beyond inconvenience; they raise safety and efficiency concerns when travel is vital for economic recovery. Politically, the issue is contentious, with Republicans criticizing Democrats for rejecting a clean funding bill and Democrats opposing negotiations over expired health care subsidies.

As controllers miss their first full paycheck, disruptions are expected to worsen, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to prevent further travel chaos and mitigate broader economic consequences.
